GPA Calculator

Add each course with its credits and letter grade. The calculator returns a GPA on the 4.0 scale or the 4.3 scale, plus the quality points behind it.

3.60

25.2 quality points across 7 credits

How to use it

  1. Choose the 4.0 or 4.3 scale.
  2. Add a row per course: name, credits, letter.
  3. Read the GPA and the quality-point total.
  4. Add or remove rows as the term changes.

Formula

GPA = (sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (sum of credits)

A+ is 4.0 on the 4.0 scale and 4.3 on the 4.3 scale. A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, B− is 2.7, C+ is 2.3, C is 2.0, C− is 1.7, D+ is 1.3, D is 1.0, D− is 0.7, and F is 0.

Two courses

An A in a 3-credit course is 12 points. A B+ in a 4-credit course is 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 points. Total points 25.2 over 7 credits is a GPA of 3.60.

GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points. An A worth 4.0 in a 3-credit course contributes 12 quality points. A B worth 3.0 in a 4-credit course contributes 12 as well. Divide total quality points by total credits. On the 4.0 scale used here, A and A+ are both 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, and each step keeps that pattern down to F at 0. On the 4.3 scale, A+ is 4.3 and the other letters match. Schools differ. If your registrar prints a scale, trust that sheet over any generic table, including this one.

Questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each grade’s points by the course credits, add those quality points, and divide by the total credits.

What is the difference between a 4.0 and a 4.3 scale?

On a 4.0 scale an A+ is capped at 4.0. On a 4.3 scale an A+ is worth 4.3, so it can lift the average above 4.0.

Do all schools use these points?

No. Some treat A− as 3.67, and some ignore plus and minus. Use your school’s table when you have it. This page states the table it uses.

Are my grades uploaded?

No. Courses stay in the browser tab.
