A 400-word abstract

Four hundred words is about a 2 minute silent read at 200 words per minute, and about a 3 minute read-aloud at 130 words per minute.

A word here is a run of text separated by whitespace. “Well-known” is one word. A sentence ends at a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time uses 200 words per minute, a common silent-reading estimate for general prose. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Character count is shown with spaces and without them, because some forms count one and some count the other. The counter updates as you type or paste.

Questions

How are words counted?

The text is split on whitespace. Empty text is zero words. Punctuation stuck to a word stays with that word.

Which character count should I use?

Use the count that matches the limit. Social bios often count spaces. Some school portals do not.

Is my writing uploaded?

No. Counting happens in the browser. Leave the page and the draft is gone unless you copied it.

How is reading time estimated?

Words divided by 200 for silent reading, and by 130 for speaking. Dense technical text is often slower.
