JPG to PNG

Convert a JPEG into a PNG with the same pixel dimensions. PNG keeps the picture lossless after the conversion, which is what design tools and some upload forms ask for.

On this device

This file never leaves your device. The tool runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Drop a .jpg or .jpeg file.
  2. Check the preview and the pixel size.
  3. Download the PNG.
  4. Compress or resize afterward if the PNG is too heavy.

A logo saved as a JPEG

A 1200×600 JPEG becomes a 1200×600 PNG. Edges that were already soft in the JPEG stay soft. Future edits will not add a second round of JPEG blocks.

JPEG has already discarded some detail, so a PNG of a JPEG is not sharper than the JPEG. It is a different container: larger, lossless from this point on, and able to hold transparency if you edit it later. Use this when a form rejects .jpg, or when you are about to edit and do not want another generation of JPEG artifacts. For a smaller file, compress as JPEG instead.

Questions

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It changes the format and stops further loss. Detail the JPEG already threw away does not come back.

Why is the PNG bigger?

PNG stores pixels losslessly. A photo that compressed well as JPEG often grows when it is wrapped as PNG.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read in your browser and processed on this device. ProHacks does not receive the photo or the PDF.

Can I convert several JPGs?

Convert one file at a time so you can check each result. Drop the next file when the download finishes.
