PNG to JPG

Convert a PNG to a JPEG at the quality you choose. Transparent pixels are filled with white, because JPEG cannot store transparency.

On this device

This file never leaves your device. The tool runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Drop a PNG.
  2. Set the JPEG quality.
  3. Look at the preview. Transparent areas are now white.
  4. Download the JPG.

A screenshot for email

A 2 MB screenshot PNG often drops under 300 KB as a JPEG at quality 0.8, which is small enough for email and still sharp enough to read.

Screenshots and graphics with flat color often become far smaller as JPEG, with a small quality cost. A PNG that uses transparency, such as a logo, will show white where it used to be see-through. If you need the transparency, keep the PNG. The quality slider runs from a small file to a near-visually-lossless JPEG. Photos usually look clean around 0.8.

Questions

What happens to transparency?

JPEG has no transparency. This converter paints a white background behind the PNG, then encodes the JPEG.

Which quality should I use?

Start at 0.8. Move down if you need a smaller file, or up if text and edges look soft.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read in your browser and processed on this device. ProHacks does not receive the photo or the PDF.

Can I turn the JPG back into a PNG later?

Yes, with the JPG to PNG tool. The transparency that was flattened to white will not return.
