Tip Calculator
Enter the bill, pick a tip, and say how many people are paying. You get the tip, the total, and the amount each person owes.
$51.60
each · tip $17.20 · total $103.20
How to use it
- Type the bill before tip.
- Tap 15, 18, 20, or 25, or type a rate.
- Set the number of people.
- Read the tip, the total, and the per-person share.
Formula
Tip = bill × rate. Total = bill + tip. Each person = total ÷ people.
The rate is a percent. 20% is 0.20. Rounding is to the nearest cent on the displayed amounts.
A $86 bill, 20% tip, two people
The tip is $17.20. The total is $103.20. Each person pays $51.60. A pre-tax tip would use a smaller base if you type only the pre-tax subtotal.
In the United States a sit-down meal is often tipped at 15%, 18%, or 20%, with 20% common when the service was solid and 25% when it was excellent. Other countries differ, and some prices already include service. The math itself is simple: tip equals bill times the rate, total equals bill plus tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people. Amounts are rounded to the cent at the end. A custom rate covers 10% or 12% where that is the local habit.
Questions
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20. On $86, the tip is $17.20 and the total is $103.20.
Should I tip on tax?
Either habit exists. If you tip on the pre-tax amount, type that subtotal as the bill. The calculator uses the number you enter.
How is the bill split?
The total including tip is divided equally. It does not track who ordered what.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is arithmetic for a bill in front of you.
